Inositols are found in food and it is sugar made in the body. It can be obtained in nine ways. Myo & D-chiro inositol plus supplement blend are very common.

Inositol may regulate certain chemicals in the body to help with such conditions as tremors, depression, and forced mental disorders. It can also help insulin to work better.

People use inositol for metabolic syndrome, polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), and reduce the risk of premature birth. It is also used for insomnia, bipolar disorder, PTSD, and many other conditions, but there is no good scientific evidence to support much of this use.

Do not mix inositol with inositol nicotinate or IP-6. These are not the same.

Usage and performance

Possibly Functional

A set of symptoms that increase the risk of diabetes, heart disease, and stroke (metabolic syndrome), taking inositol orally, with or without alpha-lipoic acid, appears to improve insulin resistance, cholesterol.

Hormonal disruption that causes ovarian enlargement by cysts (polycystic ovary syndrome or PCOS). Taking inositol orally appears to lower triglyceride levels, reduce blood pressure, and improve blood sugar, ovulation, and pregnancy rates in people with PCOS.

Premature birth. Taking inositol with folic acid orally during pregnancy appears to reduce the risk of premature birth in those with a high risk of developing diabetes during pregnancy.

Probably not working for

Sudden respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) – Giving myo-inositol IV to premature babies with ARDS does not seem to help. In fact, it could be dangerous. IV products can only be given to a healthcare provider.

Anxiety- Taking oral inositol does not appear to improve anxiety symptoms.

Depression- Taking inositol orally does not improve symptoms of depression.

Special Caution and Warnings

Pregnancy: Inositol may be safe if taken orally, for a short time. Up to 4000 mg of daily myo-inositol have been used with obvious safety.

Breastfeeding: There is not enough reliable information to know if inositol is safe to use while breastfeeding.

Children: Inositol may be safe if taken orally up to 12 weeks in children aged 5-12 years.

Nervous pain in people with diabetes (diabetesic neuropathy), taking oral inositol does not appear to improve the symptoms of diabetes mellitus.

Eye disorders in premature babies that can lead to blindness (retinopathy of prematurity), giving myo-inositol IV or orally to premature babies does not appear to reduce the risk of retinopathy. In fact, it can increase the risk of death. IV products can only be given to a healthcare provider.

There is an interest in using inositol for a number of other purposes, but there is not enough reliable information to say if it can help.

Dosing

Inositol is a sugary alcohol found in foods such as cereals, corn, meat, citrus fruits and vegetables.

As a medicine, inositol is usually used by adults in doses of 1-4 grams orally daily. It is usually taken with 200-400 mcg of folic acid daily, which dose may be best for a particular situation for that you have to talk to your healthcare provider to find out.
