Vein conditions, such as varicose and spider veins, are quite common. While varicose veins can cause significant pain and discomfort, spider veins are known for being an aesthetic concern. There are numerous FDA-approved treatments to consider for these conditions, and sclerotherapy is one of them. If you are interested in sclerotherapy, you can get help here. For your support, here is an overview of the treatment.

What is sclerotherapy?

For the uninitiated, sclerotherapy is a minimally-invasive treatment for spider veins. The procedure involves injecting a foamy, saline solution using a fine needle, which causes the vein walls to collapse. Eventually, the vein dies, and blood is rerouted through other nearby healthy veins. While you may see evident results immediately, it can take many sessions of sclerotherapy to get an effective outcome.

How long does sclerotherapy take?

Depending on the number of veins being treated and the medical history of the patient, one session of sclerotherapy can take up to an hour. There is no downtime, and you can resume routine activities immediately. You may need compression stockings for at least two weeks to get the desired results. Walking after sclerotherapy is usually recommended, although you shouldn’t indulge in high-impact activities for at least two weeks.

Does sclerotherapy hurt?

No, sclerotherapy is not painful. However, you may feel a slight burning sensation when the saline solution is injected into the vein, which lasts for less than a few seconds. You may have minor aching, but the pain is usually manageable. Some bruising and tenderness at the injection site are also not uncommon.

Other things to know

Many patients see a difference in the appearance of spider and varicose veins immediately after sclerotherapy, but typically, the results may vary from one person to another. If you seek treatment for varicose veins, you may need at least two to four sclerotherapy sessions as these are more prominent veins. Sclerotherapy is not just about cosmetic benefits, but for many patients; the treatment can help reduce pain and swelling associated with vein conditions. If you are going for the session, avoid shaving the targeted area for a few days, and do not use skincare products on the day of the treatment. Ensure you wear comfortable and well-fitted clothes.

Sclerotherapy has been a highly effective and safe treatment for many vein conditions, and if you are just concerned about the appearance of your skin, this could be the first approach of your doctor.
